The Future Of Work Is Right Here

What Wallops Flight Facility Industry Day Tells Us About the Future of Work

When I typically hear “industry day,” my mind jumps straight to handshakes, name tags, and, throwing it back even further, “show and tell” in my Kindergarten classroom. The best industry days aren’t really about the industry at all. They’re about who gets to be part of it next.

That’s what caught my eye about the agenda for Wallops Flight Facility Industry Day, coming up on August 12 at Salisbury University. Featured alongside the legislative and industry conversations is a student programs panel, featuring NASA Wallops staff and Salisbury University students.

Economic development wins, gains traction, and shares a common thread. These investments don’t happen in isolation; they come together through collaborations between the state and local governments, the university system, and industry working in lockstep. Nationwide, economic development offices are reframing groundbreakings as talent infrastructure first and facilities second. The message is this: communities that pair investment announcements with a credible talent pipeline are the ones building lasting growth. The ones that don’t risk a shiny ribbon-cutting with no one qualified to walk through the door.

Why This Matters for Maryland’s Eastern Shore

Wallops Flight Facility sits at a very cool inflection point. Commercial aerospace activity is accelerating, small businesses want a piece of that growth, and state and local leaders are showing up to be part of the conversation.

But growth on the Eastern Shore, or anywhere, for that matter, will only be as strong as the workforce that supports it. That’s why it matters that Salisbury University isn’t just hosting this event; it’s participating in it, with its own students represented on stage. This is a strategic choice with a big message: the next generation of aerospace talent isn’t a someday problem. The problem is here, and a dedicated ecosystem of partners (students included) is the only way to solve it.

A Model Worth Replicating

If you’re doing this kind of work yourself, here’s the takeaway worth borrowing: when you’re planning or communicating about an industry event, a groundbreaking, or an investment announcement, be sure the talent pipeline shows up on the agenda, not as an afterthought, but as a headline act. The communities telling that story well right now aren’t burying workforce development in a breakout session. Instead, they’re putting it on the same stage as the keynote.

That’s what Wallops Flight Facility Industry Day wants to get right. And it’s a good reminder that the future of economic development isn’t just about who’s investing in a place; it’s about who that place is investing in, too.
