Why not make this 3-day weekend a “staycation?”

The past few months have been some of the most stressful ever for anyone in economic development and tourism industries.

Along with supporting our communities, it’s important to also figure out how to support our teams, clients, and ourselves during this time!

Taking some time off this summer is a great way to do that!

As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, there are many opportunities to take a “staycation” in your hometown and to enjoy some local activities. Your staycation can also be a way to support and give business to smaller chains, local hotels, or local retailers in your community.

Of course, it’s important to first make sure that you feel safe and fully understand the safety protocols, which differ from place to place. Many restaurants and retail stores are open at 50% capacity now, with social distancing and masks requested.

Here are some suggestions of ways that you can support local businesses this weekend and beyond on a staycation:

  • Check out the Fourth of July fireworks shows happening in your community – such as those happening all over Maryland.
  • Support your favorite local restaurants by picking up curbside if you aren’t ready to dine in yet.
  • As lakes, mountains, or beaches become open in your state, it’s a great opportunity to explore what nature has to offer close to home.
  • Find one-of-a-kind experiences in your community. One of my favorites is blueberry picking at Orr’s Farm Market. You can make a “Social Distance Berry Picking” appointment here.
  • As hotels and boutiques open up, support the travel and tourism industry by booking a weekend or week-long stay. Or purchase a gift certificate to be used later in the year.

See what activities you can find in your region. And don’t forget to support the local nonprofits going to great expense to put these events together – whether that’s your local fire department or another nonprofit.

Whether you take a week or just a long weekend off, your staycation is a way to support yourself and local businesses.

What businesses would you like to encourage people to explore in your community this summer? Leave a comment down below to share!

‘Til next time,
Sandy
