What I learned in the parking lot of my car dealership

You never know where you’re going to meet your next client, referral, friend, employee… the list goes on and on.

I’m currently sitting in my car dealership — the AC went out last week — and I met a man that is a leadership coach / public speaker. He approached me because I must have given off the “I’m approachable” vibe. Actually, I he started by making fun of the fact that I’d been pounding at the keyboard on my laptop for over an hour.

He asked if I was done writing my novel (now, that’s an idea…). Anyway, I joked and said “no, the work is never done.” Then we got to talking about how he’s a consultant who focuses on diversity training. We had several mutual contacts in higher education.

This quick (5-10 minute) discussion ended with the exchange of business cards and a very detailed statement on what type of clients are ideal for each of us. We were respectful of the other’s time and very focused on our goals. It was a fun conversation.

You might be wondering why I’m sharing this story… Well, it got me thinking that you never know where you might meet someone who will change your life. Now, do I expect this man to change my life? NO, but it would be great if our paths crossed again and we were able to work together.  UPDATE: I’ve already passed his business card along to a client who might need someone to come in and conduct some ‘leadership development / diversity’ training.

The point here is that you need to put yourself in positions to meet new people and be open to what they have to offer. My family teases that I’ve never met a stranger and will start a conversation with anyone… I have to just smile and laugh because they’re right! And I wouldn’t change it!

How can you put yourself out there in your life or business today, that could lead to a whole new opportunity? Leave a comment and let me know!
