Have you noticed the shift that’s been happening over the past few years when it comes to talent attraction? We have! Though it’s not a complete shift yet, we’re seeing the start of it…
As more and more people can work remotely, they have the freedom to choose to live anywhere. Many people are no longer bound by their workplaces when it comes to their living location.
Businesses all over the country (and world) are still in the process of figuring out whether their staff will be fully remote, hybrid, or in-person. At the same time, there’s definitely still a need for in-person employees, as not every business is fully virtual.
So how can you attract top talent to your community?
If you’re telling the story of your community and making it into a place, both individuals and businesses will want to locate there.
People want to live, work, and play in a community that feels amazing and has a high quality of life. They want vibrant communities with amazing restaurants, an invigorating culture, great schools, outdoor recreation, and plenty of opportunities for entertainment.
In our community, the Downtown Frederick Partnership has been committed to creating that sense of place in Frederick. (And it’s paying off – Frederick is getting noticed and gaining superlatives such as one of the top 10 remote-friendly places to live.) The pop-up cafes and events on the Creek are great examples of how to make physical spaces in your community lit up, artistic, and a place to be.

To attract talent and thriving businesses to your place, make sure to:
- Tell the story of your community’s food, culture, nightlife, schools, and the best outdoor recreation in the region.
- Promote your community with solid photo and video assets.
- Lean into any “superlatives” you’ve earned, like “Best Broadband Access” or “#1 Place to Live” or “Most Remote-Friendly.”
What are you doing to retain the talent that you’ve trained in your high schools, technical schools, and colleges? How can you make your community a place that people want to stay at or locate to?
