Fourth annual Pickin’ in the Panhandle to feature music contests
Martinsburg, West Virginia: Pickin’ in the Panhandle, the WV State BBQ & Bluegrass Festival, will be held September 10 through 12 in Back Creek Valley [just outside Martinsburg, WV] and feature over a dozen contemporary and old school bluegrass bands, including Joe Diffie, Ricky Skaggs and Shenandoah. The event will also spotlight the talents of amateur musicians, encouraging them to share their pickin’ and playin’ skills with the audience. “This is a great opportunity for aspiring and seasoned bluegrass musicians and those who simply enjoy playing their instrument,” said Andrea Ball, festival director. “There is a lot of great talent around and we’re happy to provide a medium through which they can share those talents.”
Cash prizes will be awarded for the best flat pickin’ (guitar, dobro, or mandolin), banjo, fiddle and bluegrass band, and braggin’ rights are also part of the prize. The coveted champion will be asked back to perform at next year’s competition, as the Clowes and Dunlap Band, from Romney, WV, are doing just that the Saturday morning of the festival. Pickin’ in the Panhandle is an event the whole family will enjoy. Located in scenic Back Creek Valley, West Virginia at the Lazy A Campground, Pickin’ promises hours of musical entertainment and mouth watering food. So much fun takes place on the grounds that Pickin’ expanded to a three day event this year.
Even though the music will be heard all weekend long, don’t forget about the BBQ competition. Pickin’ in the Panhandle encourages all festival goers to check out BBQ row. Most professional BBQ team will be happy to share their prize- winning recipes, but no secrets will be shared!
Tickets are available online and or by calling the CVB office for $25 per adult (children 12 and under are free) and $50 for a three day pass. And with presentation of military ID- $10 will be taken off the ticket price. Tickets will be sold at the gate as well.
