8 Weeks of Connection: Community Connection Through Blessings in a Backpack

Welcome back to our 8 Weeks of Connection series!

For the 8 weeks leading up to the new year, PPR is highlighting different team members as they share how they’re building connections into their holiday season!

Last week, Sandy shared how she’s revived past connections through in-person visits.

Today, our Communications Specialist, Caleigh, shares how she’s connecting with her community.

Take it away, Caleigh…

As a supporter of place-based and tourist organizations, PPR’s daily work focuses on strengthening communities.

Since joining the team, I’ve grown to appreciate just how deeply a community can impact the lives of its residents—and how essential it is for us all to lift one another up in times of need.

While our team works every day to support our clients’ communities, I wanted to give back to my own this season. As part of PPR’s annual 8 Weeks of Connection series, I’m deepening my connection with the community by volunteering with Frederick’s Chapter of Blessings in a Backpack.

According to the nonprofit’s website, “One in seven kids relies on their school’s free and reduced-price meal program to provide the nourishment they need to learn and grow.” But what happens when school isn’t in session?

For the past few weeks, I’ve joined other volunteers to prepare and distribute backpacks filled with food so children in this position won’t go hungry over the weekend. Once the bags are packed, we distribute them to classrooms so students can discreetly take food home.

Volunteering with this organization has been a powerful reminder of how impactful an hour or two a week can be.

From unloading food trucks to making sure every classroom receives the right amount of food bags, each task is vital. It’s rewarding to know that these small acts make a huge difference in some lives.

Blessings in a Backpack has inspired me to get involved in other community service opportunities. I’m excited to also participate in Operation Christmas Child, where I’ll be helping pack boxes filled with gifts and essential items for children around the world.

These volunteer experiences are a reminder that connection isn’t just about the people we know—it’s about showing up for those we may never meet but whose lives we can impact in meaningful ways.

Caleigh and the PPR Strategies Team
