Guess There’s No Turning Back Now…

I’m “Putt”ing myself out there with golf. 🙂

About 25 years ago, I’d played golf two or three times with my dad.

Then, I set down my clubs and forgot about the game…until earlier this year when I signed up for a women’s golf clinic and my first tournament… at the same time.

Why I thought jumping into both at once after 25 years of dormant experience was a good idea, I still don’t know.

I used to think you had to be good at golf to even play, which is silly—playing is the practice! Ignoring that doubtful voice in my head, I decided to lean in.

Go big or go home, right?

That first tournament was the best time. Even though I was still a little underconfident about my skills, I had a great time with some things (and struggled with others), but ultimately decided I wanted to lean into learning golf.

This summer I joined a women’s golf league and played my second tournament in a Prince William County Chamber of Commerce event. I’ve met new people, played with good friends, and have enjoyed building up my game. Even my daughter Tabitha joined in as my golf buddy and took a lesson with me.

Now that I’m approaching a new year of life (in fact, as you read this, I might already be 51 years old), it’s been a great time for me to try a new sport, learn a new skill, let loose, and lean in—without being hard on myself. It is an important reminder that practice is part of the journey.

To hop on my economic development soapbox for just a second, this week is also the Solheim Cup—an international golf competition taking place right in Prince William County, Virginia. Golf, hobbies, and new interests not only enrich our lives but also attract people and investments to our community. See! Only two sentences—now stepping down from my #EconDev soapbox.

What do you do to stretch your boundaries or learn a new thing?

If you’re curious about golf, want to play, get together, or just say “Hi!”—I’d love to hear from you. Let’s connect!

P.S. From The Editor: In case you couldn’t tell, it is Sandy’s birthday week! Please address all gifts and letters of celebration to the PPR office or just send her a quick email!😜
